How to Lubricate Your Garage Door

Since new garage doors often come already lubricated, some homeowners and commercial business owners are not aware of the fact that garage doors should be lubricated to help keep the door in good operation, extending the life of the door and requiring fewer repairs.

Here are some tips on how to lubricate your garage door to help keep it in good shape, likely requiring fewer repairs in the future:

What to lubricate: Wherever you see metal-to-metal contact can and should be lubricated including hinges (what bends as the door goes around the track radius), metal rollers (including both the ball bearings and race – which is what the ball bearings run inside of).

What not to lubricate: Parts that are not constructed from metal, as well the track. The reason that the track should not be lubricated is that the rollers should roll on the track, not slide on it. When rollers slide they can become flat on one side, then they will not be able to roll again and will need to be replaced before they can function properly.
